Like A House On Fire wins the Steele Rudd Award

Cate Kennedy’s marvellous short story collection, Like A House On Fire, has won the Steele Rudd Award at the 2013 Queensland Literary Awards. The judges said:

Kennedy enters into the domestic moment through a small door and finds a vista to the inner self. The stories are built on tenderness, treachery and loss and are pulled along by a compulsive longing. However dark the territory, Kennedy’s take on life is marked by humour. Her style is strong and expansive and lifts beyond its realist roots to reveal a master’s love of language.
